Ring of Fire: Solar Eclipse/Surya Grahan – 21st June 2020

What is a solar eclipse?
During a Solar eclipse the Sun, Moon and Earth are in a straight line and the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth due to which the rays of the sun are blocked from reaching the Earth. This darkens the sky as if it is night time.

There are three kinds of solar eclipses –

Total – During a total solar eclipse, the Moon fully blocks the Sun with the people on Earth unable to see it and there being complete darkness.
Partial – During a partial solar eclipse, the Moon covers a part of the Sun making a uncovered part of sun visible to the people.
Annular – During an annular solar eclipse, the Moon covers the Sun fully, but due to its relatively small size the outer ring of the Sun is completely visible to the people.

Why the Annular solar Eclipse is being called – ‘Ring of fire’?
The Moon will cover the Sun from the center leaving a ring of light visible in the sky. This will happen as the Moon will be far away from Earth, which will make its relative size not big enough to cover the Sun completely.

The annular solar eclipse on June 21 will first start for the people of Congo in Africa and progress through South Sudan, Ethiopia, Yemen, Oman, Saudi Arabia, the Indian Ocean and Pakistan, before entering India over Rajasthan. From India, the annular phase will be visible in the morning of 21st June during the hours ~9.15 am to ~3.00 pm IST from some places within a narrow corridor of the northern part of the country (parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Uttarakhand) and it will be seen as partial solar eclipse from the rest part of the country. This eclipse has said to be of the highest magnitude at the instant of Greatest Eclipse among all the annular solar eclipses between 2003 and 2031. The next annular solar eclipse with a higher magnitude is predicted to be on September 12, 2034. The visibility of Ring is said be visible for very short duration of approximately 1- 1.5 minutes.

According to the Hindu mythology Eclipses or Grahan are considered to be inauspicious . The sun, which is worshiped as a major life force in the universe, disappears during the solar eclipse, making it an omen of all things evil. The absence of the sun’s rays can increase the amount of bacteria and germs in the atmosphere, thereby polluting people.

Similarly in various other mythologies its about the Sun being swallowed, eaten to a bit or stolen by different animals/creatures like in India – Rahu (There is a whole story of Amrit Manthan), China – celestial dragon, Vietnam – giant frog, Korea – mythical Dogs, United States – Bear. The ancient Greeks believed that a solar eclipse was a sign of angry gods and that it was the beginning of disasters and destruction.

Here are some of the Myths that people follow in India during solar eclipses:

  1. Worshiping or touching gods is strictly prohibited during this period. Even temple doors usually stay closed during eclipses. After the eclipse ends, the idols are supposed to be washed with Ganga water to purify them.
  2. Meditation, chanting hymns or mantras and singing devotional songs during an eclipse are supposed to protect one from the evil effects.
  3. The rules dictate that no food should be cooked during the eclipse. Leftovers are finished off before the period of the eclipse. Some people in India leave tulsi or Indian basil leaves on cooked food items, and cover them to keep them safe.
  4. Sleeping, urination, defecation, sexual intercourse and makeup are also prohibited during the eclipse. Pregnant women are considered to be especially susceptible to the evil forces during eclipses. Not only are they supposed to abstain from activities like cutting vegetables and stitching clothes, but in some parts of India, they’re not even supposed to sit with their legs crossed.
  5. After the eclipse is over, people are directed to take a bath, and change into fresh and clean clothes. Sprinkling of Ganga water or taking a dip in the Ganga is also supposed to wash away the evil done by the eclipse.

However, there are no Scientific basis to these myths/claims and they have been debunked by the scientists and astronomers around the world. However, they do emphasize that anyone watching a solar eclipse must protect their eyes.

If you’ve ever watched a solar eclipse you know how exciting the experience can be and also how quickly the experience can go by.

If you are one of the photographers then it would definitely excite you and would be an opportunity to capture the eclipse to your best skills. If you are one of them and have the best of your captures to share and showcase with us, drop an email to – salesforcepredator@gmail.com. We would love to have it in our gallery!

Fall of Christopher Columbus

Due to recent incidents of racisms, many orgnaisations are taking down symbols of hate such as monuments, memorials. In midst of that one controversial historical figure has come back into the spotlight : Christopher columbus.

Native American activists believe Columbus was responsible for centuries of indigenous genocide.

However, for many Italian Americans Columbus has always been an important symbol in their heritage.

Is Fall of Columbus Statue Justified ?

Christopher Columbus(1451 – 1506), a 15th century navigator was born in the Republic of Genoa (today : Italy).

Christopher Columbus in his life completed four major expedition accross the atlantic oceans. This led to the way for European exploration, expansion ,exploitation and colonization of America.

As most of you might know “12 October” is Observed as Columbus Day, a national holiday in many countries of America. This Day marks the arrival of Christopher Columbus on American continents dated back to 12th October 1492.

Columbus when reached american continent, found new foods, animals and indigenous people who, according to him were childlike and could be easily turned into slaves. While returning, he also captured some and took them back with him.

Some states including Michigan, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia had already renamed Columbus Day as an ‘Indigenous Peoples’ Day’ in the recent years to give recognition to the native populations who were exploited.

Coming back to todays situation, Statues, flags and displays of Confederate or racist symbols are being removed across America, amid widespread protests calling for an end to systemic racism.

In the similar campaign, when focus turned to Columbus, many states started removing the Columbus statue. But of them all most important are the series of event taking place in the city of columbus.

Columbus is the largest city in the country to be named after columbus. There are three major Christopher Columbus statues in the city at : the City Hall , State Community College and in front of the Ohio Statehouse.

On tuesday night , the Columbus statue at City Hall and State Community College were vandalized after the school’s announcement. Similar statues were being targeted by protesters across the country amidst demonstrations over racisms.

There are many points that needs to be taken into consideration. Does mere removing the statues assure there won’t be racism. Columbus city and many others throughout the country are named after Christopher Columbus. This may feel like destruction of history . If it was done for the city were the residents had a say in it ?

It is always easy to remove statues, flags, monuments, but until you remove the hate from your heart all of that means nothing.

Also what next then, are we going to rename the Columbia city. Are we in future going to erase the history as per convinience?

To be honest, removing the statue is not a problem, we can do it anytime, but for what extent can we can change the historical things. Can we not accept that it was history, and learn from it to not repeat the mistakes and eradicate this norms of inequalities from our heart and head.

The Discovery Of America

In this post, we are going to discuss an interesting topic “The Discovery Of America”.

As most of you might know “12 October” is Observed as Columbus Day, a national holiday in many countries of America. This Day marks the arrival of Christopher Columbus on American continents dated back to 12th October 1492.

But is it true? were there no people on American continent before Columbus?
Was Columbus really the first person to discover America?

There are a lot of theories that defy this belief. Let’s discuss them one by one.

Irish Monk

One of the theory suggests that a six centuries Irish monk named “Saint Britain” sailed to North America on a “currach “(currach is nothing but a wooden boat covered with an animal skin).
His journey is mentioned in ancient records of Ireland. However there is no evidence that makes this clear, but in 1976, a writer Tim Severn decided to prove this journey. He built the replica of currach ,the boat which Irish monk used and he sailed a along the road described by the traveling monks and surprisingly he landed in the Canada.

The Vikings

The Vikings early journey to North America are well accepted as historical facts by most of the scholars now.
Around 10th century Viking Explorer “Leif Erikson” sailed to a place which he mentioned as “Vinland” which is of course now the Canadian province of Newfoundland. There were no proof of this theory as well but from 1960 for seven years Norwegian Explorer Helge Ingstad and his wife an archaeologist Anne Stine Ingstad along with the international team of archaeologists exposed the foundation of eight separate buildings after some digging. So finally in 1969 Congress designated October 9 as Leif Eriksson Day and officially accepted this fact.

The Chinese Theory

A small group of scholar do believe that the Muslim Chinese from the Ming Dynasty discovered America 71 years before Columbus actually did it. In the book “1421:The Year China Discovered America” it is mentioned that it’s Xing, a sailor at that time sailed to the east coast of United States and may have established some settlements
in the South America. But most of the historians believe and say that the “China first” theory is full of loopholes as America has always been the land of immigrants.

There must be a question so if Columbus wasn’t the first why does he get all of the credit. To be honest, he was the one who opened the America to Europe. Europe at that
time was a colonial power.

To the contrast some people do believe that neither Columbus nor Vikings were the first, there were already people present on American continents and their ancestors must have came first.
